Drop test: Hardness testing for maximum safety and reliability

Batteries are at the heart of many technical applications - from medical devices to robotic systems. But what happens if a battery accidentally slips out of your hand or falls during transport? We subject our battery packs to rigorous tests to ensure that they can withstand these stresses. One of these essential safety tests is the so-called drop test.

What is the drop test?

The drop test is a standardised method for testing the resistance and safety of batteries. Our standard battery packs undergo extensive test procedures in accordance with the UL 2054, IEC 62133 and UN 38.3 safety standards. These standards ensure that batteries do not pose a hazard and remain functional even under adverse conditions.

How does the drop test work?

For this test, we take three battery samples and drop them from a height of 1 metre onto a hard concrete surface. We concentrate on the most sensitive parts of the housing to maximise the resistance. Each sample is dropped three times in succession in the same position.

To pass the test, the battery must fulfil the following criteria:

  • No explosion or ignition
  • No leaks or open vents within six hours of the test
  • No damage to the protective circuit
  • No exposed cells or electronic components
  • All functions of the battery should be retained

Drop test for foreseeable abuse

In addition to the standardised drop test, we carry out additional tests to simulate possible everyday stresses and mishaps. Our internal ‘Drop Test Foreseeable Abuse’ test was developed to simulate foreseeable accidents during use or handling. We drop our batteries several times from a height of 0.75 metres onto different surfaces and in different directions.

Our requirement: The batteries must not only remain safe, but also be fully functional and continue to fit into the respective customer applications without any problems.
